The citizens' activist group Emeryville Neighbors United announces its next community meeting on Monday the 24th at 5514 Doyle Street across from the Doyle Street Cafe at 7:00 PM. The meeting will take place in the ground level Community Room and is open to all members of the public. The proposed Sutter Hospital project will be the topic of discussion.
It’s disappointing to see Emeryville adopting the worst habits of its neighbors. We’ve generally been a pragmatic city that builds housing, supports density, and provides the public infrastructure needed to make it work.
ReplyDeleteBut the familiar excuses are creeping in: Piedmont claims there’s “no room” for apartments; Berkeley turns quality-of-life complaints—even about ambulances—into arguments against basic public services. Now a small group in Emeryville is pushing the same mindset: opposing community investment and seeking to privatize or eliminate services that a dense, walkable city depends on.
If you want the exclusionary, hyper-NIMBY politics of Piedmont or Berkeley, move there. Don’t import them to Emeryville.
I’m not sure I understand your argument. Are you arguing against democracy? Is North Korea a better model? Are you asserting neighbors getting together with neighbors and hashing out how they want their city to be is somehow illegitimate? The premise of citizen activism is that sometimes governments don’t adequately represent the will of the people. When governments fail, citizens rise up and become active without the government’s imprimatur; looking out after the people’s collective interest. Is there a problem you see with this?

ReplyDeleteThe Notice of Preparation is ready to come out. Approvals will come after the Environmental Impact Report is issued....several months from now.
