Sukhdeep Kaur Ascends To City Council by Appointment

City Council Appoints Sukhdeep Kaur Emeryville's Newest Council Member

Breaking News

Tonight, at the first Emeryville City Council meeting open to the public to attend in person since the pandemic closed City Hall in 2020, the City Council voted 4-0 to elect Sukhdeep Kaur to the City Council on their first ballot.  Ms Kaur who lives in the Watergate neighborhood and who ran a nearly successful bid for Council in November replaces Ally Medina who quit her Council post in January.  Nine candidates applied but two dropped out before the 5:30 meeting.  Council member Kaur immediately assumed her position on the dais, as is the tradition for newly sworn in City Council members

Sukhdeep Kaur takes the oath of office in the City Council chambers in a sparsely attended
first open meeting since the beginning of the pandemic.

  2. We look forward to having Sukhdeep, a Watergate resident, on the Council. I hope the Council can focus on increasing voting in our communities, as only 13% of our registered voters turned out for the last election. Voting used to be convenient in the Watergate Community, and in the Firehouse station. It was easy for our elderly and non-driving residents to cast ballots. Vote by mail is cool, but it's meaningful democracy that casts a ballot.

    1. I agree with your frustration. Democracy is how we are supposed to operate. The people should be able to decide who will be their City Council members. But Mr Bauters wanted to have control and apparently he is a very persuasive politician. This was a choice made by our City Council operating in our best interest….or so Mr Bauters says. But when a thing of great value (getting another favorable new Council member) is held in silence by a politician in such a bargain, warning buzzers should be going off. There was a Tattler story calling for democracy on January 17th you can read here: http://emeryvilletattler.blogspot.com/2023/01/council-says-no-to-democracy-for.html

    2. No, I didn't mean Emeryville. Emeryville won. We got a true professional like Sukhdeep to be in city council. Besides, you said before that the people don't always get it right in elections. Remember when you said that?

    3. Yes, I said that. People don’t always get it right when they select leaders in a democracy. Think Trump and Hitler (who was elected). Democracy can be very problematic. It’s expensive, messy and sometimes people don’t get it right You can make a cogent argument that people in America are ‘getting it wrong’ more now than ever. It’s bad, but it’s better than the alternative.
