School District Demurs on Mesfun Explanation

Thursday comes and goes:
Still No Answer on School Principal

The Emery Unified School District announced today they will not offer citizens and parents an explanation as to the status of newly hired Anna Yates Elementary School Principal Russum Mesfun as had been promised earlier in the week.  Principal Mesfun continues to be absent at the school and the Superintendent of Emery Schools, John Rubio, himself responsible for hiring Mr Mesfun, will serve as both Superintendent of the District and Principal of Anna Yates indefinitely.
On the first day of the new school year, Monday, Mr Rubio announced the District would offer something by way of an explanation for the missing principal on Thursday but today Mr Rubio begged off, telling the Tattler "I have to check with legal" and that "I'm not done with internal processes [that would enable an answer]."   Superintendent Rubio now refuses to give a timeline for citizens and parents as to explaining what's happened with Mr Mesfun.

Superintendent Rubio hired the controversial Mr Mesfun and has offered that he himself would be responsible for any negative eventuality as a result.

Look to the Tattler to stay on this story as we will make sure the people get an answer to this.

  1. Is it true that two naked guys were at Anna Yates yesterday?

  2. Either he (Mesfun) did something really egregious or it's back to the future for EUSD. Either way Dr. Rubio and the Board owe us an explanation. And let's hope to God this isn't about something that is going to end up in a lawsuit and cost EUSD hundreds of thousands of dollars like the Lodi District were forced to shell out. As much as I like Dr Rubio, if that were the case I'm afraid we'd be looking for a new Superintendent as well.

  3. Why won't the police dept. give you any information? Or email alerts to the parents?

  4. Thank your stars that Mesfun is not running any school in your district. At the risk of posing an ad-hominim fallacy, this guy was an utter and complte disaster! Please stay on top of this story Tattler. Many outside of Emeryville also want to know what happened to this guy.

    1. The only information the Emery Unified School District is releasing is that Mr Mesfun is on "paid administrative leave".

    2. Brian, You are doing a good job keeping up with this but it deserves more than a comment buried in month old article. A fresh update is in order.
So Mesfun is getting paid for doing nothing. At least that is better than him getting paid to destroy Emeryville's elementary school like he did to schools in Lodi and Fillmore.
In this blog Mesfun has variously been referred to with the title of Mr. or with Dr. Which is it? Could his dismissal be because he falsified his credentials, claiming to have a doctorate when he does not? This should be easy to track down.

    3. The School District has not provided any further information. When they do, the Tattler will report. Regarding the use of honorifics, Mr Mesfun has a Ed.D but we don't (usually) use these titles for government officials. Doing so only serves to put them at an unnecessary remove. We want our government officials and elites to be accessible and as a consequence accountable to the average Emeryville resident, if only in the psychology of it. Mr or Ms should be good enough for any of them.

  5. What ever happened with this story? As a parent, I've heard nothing. Is Dr. Mesfun on the pay roll? How much did this hiring cost the District? Why was the calendar changed so quickly and the students aren't in school this week? What was so imperative? Once again, Emery is showing no signs of communication.

    1. As the story says: there's still no answer from the District. Mr Mesfun is still on the payroll but the Superintendent, John Rubio is still the acting principal. There have been no extra costs associated with this according to the District (but we only have a part time principal at full cost). The teachers are being taught how to teach the California mandated Common Core this week. The District refuses to inform us why Mr Mesfun is not acting as principal.
