The Worst Academic Record in the East Bay:
The Emery School Board Members Should Not Be Running For Re-Election
Instead, They Should Do What Failed Leaders Do In Japan:
恥ずかしながら辞職
Opinion
Perennial Emery School Board member Brynnda Collins spoke for the whole board at the recent League of Woman Voters candidate’s forum when, on camera, she told the attendees that Emery school district must "stay on track". That’s a cliché line commonly used when a politician wants to run on their record. But Ms Collins and her slate mates, Susan Donaldson and Regina Chagolla, the three Emery school board members who are running for re-election, really don't want to run on their records – so Ms Collins’ line was only meant to obscure. In truth, they don’t want us to know their record. Because the more Emeryville voters find out about the record of the existing school board, the more they want Emery to get off that track.
On their watch, Emery Unified School District hasn’t budged from last place academically among Alameda County school districts. The current culture of failure began six years ago when Emery slid to the bottom. And there it has remained ever since. But it’s not for a lack of spending. Emeryville taxpayers fund their school district at the highest rate of any school district in the entire East Bay. We pay more than $27,000 per student per year for them to run our school district. The next highest spending comes from Berkeley Unified where they spend about $18,000 per student (California average is about $14,000). But Berkeley gets excellent academic results for the money they pay. We spend the most and get the worst results. Our students score 23% proficiency in math and 37% in English, the worst scores in Alameda County. And so these three incumbent school board members are out talking to voters about anything other than their record.
Where does all the money go at Emery? How could they spend so much and get such bad results? The answer is administrators and consultants. Emery has the highest ratio of administrators to students in Alameda County. But more distressing is the squandering of public funds going to educational consultants over the last six years on the school board's watch.
Emery spends millions of dollars on educational consultants. The numbers tell the tale: whereas California school districts spend on average 52% of their budget on instruction, Emery spends only 19%. Other school districts spend on average 12% of their budget on 'other spending' which includes educational consultants where Emery spends 67%. That’s an awfully high percentage of the budget to be spent on something that's clearly not helping.
Meanwhile, teachers at Emery are paid so poorly they can’t afford to live here. Paying teachers more could help Emery attract the best and the brightest to our little district. If we stopped spending so much on consultants (and administration) we could pay the teachers more. Teachers know how to educate children in the real world, educational consultants don't. Teachers are the ones in the trenches, doing the real work. To empower teachers is to upset the dysfunctional 'top down' culture at Emery.
Now these three incumbents at Emery school board want us to vote for their re-election. They're asking us to vote for dysfunction. They're asking us to vote to keep Emeryville schools on the bottom, the worst in Alameda County.
The Japanese have an expression commonly used by CEOs of large corporations when they fail to manage the corporation and bring shame upon themselves, it’s called Hazukashinagara jishoku or 恥ずかしながら辞職 , meaning to shamefully resign. That’s what should be happening at Emery instead of them running for re-election.
Alas, this is part of the current trend in America; failed leaders doubling down and gaslighting the public. In Japan, a place where public shame still exists, failed leaders announce for the good of the organization they will 恥ずかしながら辞職 as they step down in humility. Here, they tell us to keep them on track.
A valuable site to verify how Emery is failing the children may be viewed HERE. Make sure to scroll all the way down to 'Academic Summary' and 'District Finances'.
This is how they do it in Japan Executives at a Dentsu Corporation press conference resign in shame over a worker 'karoshi' scandal or death from over work. In America, failed leaders double down. |
Thanks for highlighting the failures of the school district. What specifically needs to be done to turn things around?
ReplyDeleteStop spending money on educational consultants. Cut spending on administrators. Shame Disney/Pixar into paying the money they promised for our school district. Shame other large Emeryville based corporations into supporting our schools. Spend more money on teacher's salaries. Make Emery teacher-friendly so we can get the best hires and retain at the highest levels. Turn Emery into a teacher-centric culture. Change the administration into a 'support teachers' culture.
Deleteyou failed to mention berkeley's student enrollment compared to emeryville's, which numbered around 600 k-12 before eccl was constructed. oh, and don't forget to include legal expenses each time the superintendent or board is questioned. what salaries do the superintendents earn for berkeley and oakland, compared to emeryville?
ReplyDeleteI just read in the Eville Eye that board member Susan Donaldson says you are lying about the school districts ranking in Alameda county. What do you say about that? Who should we believe?
ReplyDeleteFirst off, let me note the absurdity of Rob Arias, the editor of that blog, positing himself in our elections. Mr Arias lives in suburban Contra Costa County, more than 30 miles from Emeryville but he feels that he should tell us how to vote in our elections. Rob, the guy that left Emeryville still feels that he knows what’s best for us and he’s going to let us know for our own good. How nice of him to give a microphone to the school board to try to take down my candidacy for the school board.
DeleteRob should ask his friends on the Emery school board why we’re even having an election this year. The reason these three board incumbents are now in panic mode as they scramble to stop me is because I decided to be a candidate for the board. If I hadn’t entered the race, Emeryville voters wouldn’t even have a choice because there wouldn’t have been an election. The three would just walk into the job uncontested like how it usually happens here at Emery. These three incumbents are angry they have to face the voters and Rob is happy to help them out by attacking the guy that’s forcing them to face the voters.
Rob has used his blog to spread lies about me since he started it a few years after the Tattler began.
Regarding the facts, you should see for yourself what the California Department of Education says about Emery. Every number in this piece is directly from them, regardless of what Susan Donaldson says. Here’s a good site that puts it all together from the Department of Education:
https://www.greatschools.org/california/emeryville/emery-unified-school-district/
I will put this as a link on the bottom of the story also. The link goes straight to Emery Unified and includes most of the data I feature in this story. Make sure to scroll down to ‘Academic Summery’ and then scroll further down to ‘District Finances’.
Skeptical thinking is good. It’s a valuable critical thinking skill. It’s always best to consider the source. Consider whether the school board members have an interest in making the public think the district is doing better than it is. Then consider a parent with a child at Emery and whether that parent has an interest in saying the district is doing worse than it is. Looking at it with a skeptic’s eye like this, the most likely exaggerator or prevaricator would be the school board member. The school board has an interest in saying the district is better than it is because it reflects better on them. They have shown no patience in people that are critical of the job they’re doing.
Hey Tattler comment readers, is it just me, or does Brian talk and act like Steve Bannon? Not necessarily ideologically, but the tone and manner are similar.
ReplyDeleteSteve Bannon you say? Not Donald Trump? Is Steve Bannon now scarier than Donald Trump? Usually when people want to invoke the boogie man it’s Donald Trump, “You’re bad! You’re like Donald Trump!”. Points to you for picking a different boogie man. Maybe Donald has lost some of his scary qualities that I’m not aware of.
DeleteSteve hates democratic governance and he calls on violent thugs to take it down to install a fascist leader. I love democratic governance that embodies transparency and accountability and that’s been central to the Tattler project from the beginning. Steve is Machiavellian and he thinks it’s great when the government lies to the people to achieve its ends whereas I think truth telling is an essential part of government….even when the truth is uncomfortable.
Steve Bannon and I act totally differently so I don’t see your point. Maybe you mean Brian and Steve are both passionate about government (!) and then I would agree with you. Is that what you meant to say?
Haha I said you weren’t the same ideologically, but in tone and manner. I mean, even your response has Bannon vibes. Loud and brash.
ReplyDeleteYou said “Not necessarily ideologically…” so I asked then if you meant ‘passionate’? And your response now is, yes, you meant passionate. Being that the word ‘brash’ means ‘strong, energetic, or irreverent’ and loud means loud, then yes, that’s passionate. Steve Bannon and I are both passionate; him for fascism and against the Constitution and me for the people of Emeryville getting the town they want in support of the Constitution. I say we need more passionate people working in support of the commons. Remember, there are plenty of people out there working passionately at odds with the commons; corporatist neoliberals and fascist guys like Steve Bannon. The community is worth fighting for….even if it sometimes means you have to be strong, energetic and irreverent. You and I agree! Thanks for the comments.
DeleteGreat! Yes, we do. Vote Bannon!
ReplyDeleteI take back what I said about you and I agreeing then. I see reading comprehension is not your strong suit. Thanks for the comments regardless.
DeleteOh sorry, that was a typo. I got confused. Vote Donahue, obviously.
ReplyDeletePeople should vote Donahue for Emery school board if they think our school district should not be on the bottom academically. They should vote Donahue if they think we should get better results for all the money we spend on our schools. They should vote Donahue if they think the government should be accountable and transparent. Thanks for your comments and thanks for supporting our schools.
DeleteI mean, I said it. “Vote for Donahue”. Why go on another Bannonesque rant if you don’t want to sound like him?
ReplyDeleteAgain, your problems with reading comprehension continue to vex. As I showed you and as you concurred, my ideas on governance are the polar opposite of Steve Bannon. That leaves only that I am passionate about good democratic governance (amid an Emery Unified culture of bad governance). As you said, Steve Bannon is passionate about his (fascist) ideas of governance that he holds. Now you’ve introduced the word ‘rant’. Being that it is defined as, ‘to speak or shout at length in a wild, impassioned way’, isn’t it a bit obtuse that you are questioning why I keep on commenting when you are the one that is seeking that I do that? Incidentally, I am not shouting and ‘wild’ doesn’t apply.
DeleteIt is you that has determined that Mr Bannon and I are both passionate (I have agreed). You have been asking me questions and I have been answering them. So in this case ‘Bannonesque’ means someone that is impassioned about trying to fix the dysfunction at the Emery Unified School District. I never said I don’t want to do that, rather I have asserted quite clearly that I do. Your question is thus obtuse.
I support paying our teachers more. And i agree no more consultants. Its wasting money that should go to the teachers.
ReplyDeleteHa ha, that foto of the disgraced executives’ resigning bows with the caption ‘this is how the Japanese do it’ is pretty funny Brian. Best intentions, no doubt. I nominate you to run for school board next term. Perhaps announce your candidacy right away?
