Priforce Victory Called 'Huge Upset'
Money & Power Backed Council Member Courtney Welch Loses

The loss for Ms Welch is a blow for Mayor Bauters who has used his position to push against Council member Priforce in the Council chambers and in the delegate race securing the endorsement of Ms Welch by Council colleagues Ally Medina, and David Mourra. Despite his Council colleagues working against him and with the delegate race won, Mr Priforce is now seen as a rising political star in regional politics, and a challenge to Mr Bauters. The two councilmen can be seen as representing two different visions for Emeryville with Mr Bauters’ side represented by a deference to housing developers versus a deference to a more democratic policy vision shown by Mr Priforce.

During the campaign, Councilman Priforce signed a pledge to not take donations from corporations including from corporate real estate organizations such as YIMBY, an action that the YIMBY backed Councilwoman Courtney Welch mocked on the campaign trail.
Speaking to the Tattler, Allyssa Victory, the top vote getter in the Democratic delegate race and an Oakland mayor challenger in the election last November said, “The People’s Slate was truly independent and all 12 candidates were successfully elected due to a strong grassroots campaign that included a people-centered platform, direct outreach, voter registration, and education to overcome the many hurdles in the election process. All members of the Slate, whether re-elected or elected for the first time, ran to change the status quo by addressing the crises in our democracy and increasing accountability to the people we are elected to represent."
Council member Priforce came in 6th place in the delegate race with 286 votes while Council member Welch came in 16th place with 192 votes.

You idiot. Priforce did not beat Welch. If you actually paid attention instead of posting garbage you would see that the election was for 7 self identifying females and 7 other than self-identifying females to be elected. They weren’t even competing for the same slots.

I’m so glad this dumb election is finally over. Folks like you try to make being delegate into this huge thing which it’s not and really suly the whole thing. In no other part of the state does this race evoke so much stupid drama. I’m a past delegate all it is is a free pass to a fucking state conference where people just rubber stamp the state platform and planks and then go partying together. Holy fucking Christ, Batman 😂😂😂😂

DeleteThis Tattler hater (DM?) knows that Kalimah won and Courtney lost and she is just lying in her comment but to the rest of you, it’s important to know that this spring when the Democratic delegates assemble and begin their work voting on the party platform and selecting party leadership positions, Kalimah Priforce will be there doing his duty and voting along with the rest of the winners announced on Friday. Who won’t be there? Courtney Welch. Why? Because she LOST.
The Democratic Party at the 18th Assembly District likes to ensure gender equality by guaranteeing there be seven winning SIF delegates (Self Identifying Females) and seven winning OSIFs (Other than Self Identifying Females). Kalimah Priforce came in third place among OSIFs which means he won and will become a delegate. Courtney Welch came in ninth place among SIFs which means she lost and will not become a delegate.
The only way around this loss for Courtney Welch is if she can convince Assemblywoman Mia Bonta to place her in her own personal group of delegates that doesn’t get decided by the people. If that happens, the Tattler will report. But to repeat, Kalimah Priforce is the people’s democratic choice and he won the election. The people said NO to Courtney Welch and she lost. I know this is hard for you to accept but Democratic politics in California is not like Republican politics in Washington DC. Here the losers lose.
Oh and you may think the Tattler is dumb but at least we know that three is smaller than seven and nine is bigger than seven. No party for you (or Courtney).
The business and government elite (and their sycophants) don’t like to be held to account, of course.

The Tattler will 'throw the Brown Act at' all who celebrate its violation. Those would usually be the business and government elite BTW.

It's this childish thought he has that if we don't like his blog, we must be in cahoots with the other blog. Some deep insecurities here at the Tattler. He also tries really hard to sound smart and witty using words like "scheffer" and "sycophant" (he uses that one ALL THE TIME). It's almost like he wants desperately for people to think he's smarter than your average blogger.
ReplyDeleteNews seekers in Emeryville have only two sources (even though Rob’s blog is mostly now restaurant advertising, real estate advertising and the police blotter). If you don’t like the Tattler, you’re left with restaurant advertising and ‘if it bleeds, it leads’. Some people like that kind of thing more than mostly political news the Tattler reports. I direct people over to Rob’s site if I think they would be happier there (and because I don’t make money off page views).
DeleteI don’t try to ‘sound smart’ with the Tattler. I just tailor my reporting to people with high school diplomas or greater. Emeryville has the highest educational status of any East Bay city (more than Berkeley!) and so my writing style fits the demographic. Because of this I use words most people know by the time they graduate the 12th grade…words like sycophant. I could say ‘a person who acts obsequiously toward someone important in order to gain advantage’ every time I need to talk about that but notice how many more words I have to use? It’s very cumbersome. So I use the most accurate word. I’m sorry if this is too academic for you. Maybe you should head over to Rob’s blog where the prose is more….how should I say it? Dumbed down.
I think we all know that there’s only one “blog” in Emeryville and it’s the one hosted on blogspot.com. Brian’s jealousy of the other news site and the loyal following and revenue its built is obvious in almost every story he writes. Rob is truly living “rent free” in Brian’s head.

DeleteGetting technical about it, being that a ‘blog’ is defined as: ‘a Web site on which someone writes about personal opinions, activities, and experiences’, neither site is actually a blog, because both sites commonly contain news stories but not personal activities or experiences (Rob’s recent story about his train trip to Seattle notwithstanding). Both sites have a guest article feature but only the Tattler has a regular contributor besides the editor, making the Tattler the less ‘bloggy’ of the two (not that there’s anything wrong with bloginess).
DeleteOther than that, Rob’s blog and the Tattler are completely different. Rob uses the business model and the Tattler doesn’t. Rob’s blog is underwritten by corporations, whom he commonly writes flattering stories about while the Tattler never takes money from anyone. Rob wants and needs clicks to justify his advertising rate but the Tattler doesn’t need clicks at all. Rob is primarily concerned with forwarding the interests of the business community and the Tattler is interested in furthering the interests of the resident community. The Tattler doesn’t advertise on social media or anywhere else for that matter because there’s no benefit to be had. People come to the Tattler of their own free will, driven by their own interests. Rob needs to coerce people to feed the business model. The Tattler has loyal readers who know we will never ask them for money nor will we ever ask them to withstand a barrage of commercial vending.
The Tattler reports on Rob because he is a newsmaker in the public interest. So for instance, we reported on Rob defrauding Emeryville’s Below Market Rate housing program, of which he was a beneficiary. Later, we reported when he moved to Contra Costa County after the City of Emeryville forced him out of his government subsidized housing unit.

DeleteI hear you live at the artist coop which is intended to provide stable housing for artists yet everyone hates you and you haven’t produced a single piece of art (unless you consider the fiction you write “art”?) in decades while owning property outside the state and paying like $100 in annual CA property taxes because of Prop 13. This reader isn't complaining about it. It is our constitutional right to leave comments in the Emeryville Tattler. And like one of the readers commented, we should be thankful that Brian created this forum so we could discuss his "articles". Brian doesn't get to decide when the conversation is over. Also, could I buy one of your sculptures? I'm a critical thinker, I think I qualify to have an original Brian Donahue in my home.

ReplyDeleteSmart people or educated people aren’t clairvoyant. They need to know about things to process them and arrive at a decision. If a candidate for political office doesn’t get enough funding to get his message out to the people, many people won’t know about his ideas. That’s why campaign financing laws are forwarded (by those who don’t tout the corporate/plutocrat line), to enable all ideas equal visibility. If you don’t spend money, lots of money, you don’t get your message out and you lose. People without corporate funding are losers.

DeleteNo, because if the smart people of Emeryville knew about what was in my campaign literature they would then do what smart people do: check the veracity of the claims, in this case by going to the California Department of Education. And then they would see they were being presented with two visions of public education in Emeryville. They would have seen the vision of the status quo of the three incumbents and their expensive failing schools versus my vision trying a new way by empowering teachers and stopping spending on educational consultants and then they would have voted for me (presuming they are not child hating sociopaths). But this didn’t happen because I couldn’t get my message out to enough (smart) people.

I’m saying, what did the people of Emeryville actually do leading up to them casting their vote for Emeryville school board. Did they say to themselves, “I don’t know who this Brian Donahue is, so I’m not going to vote for him.” Or did they say, “I don’t know who Brian Donahue is, let me look him up…oh he almost got arrested crashing a party he had no business being in? I’m not voting for that.” You could believe whatever you want, but let me say you spend 40+ years in Emeryville with a highly visible platform to express your opinions, and all you could muster is 900 votes? Well, like a famous Emeryville resident once said, “here the losers lose”.
